North West London Pathology (NWLP) is committed to delivering first class diagnostic laboratory services, including research, development and training. We fully understand the needs of all our users, whether clinicians, patients or commissioners, and continually work towards improving our service as these needs change.
The Pathology Quality department is responsible for ensuring that quality management systems are fully implemented, and regulatory and accreditation requirements are met. All laboratories at the Imperial sites within NWLP are accredited by UKAS against ISO15189:2012, and the relevant laboratories also comply with the regulations and requirements of the following bodies:
- The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA);
- The European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI);
- The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA);
- The National Health Service Cervical Screening Program (NHSCSP);
- The Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

NWLP has a dedicated Pathology Applications Team, led by an IT Operations Manager and an IT Development and Interface Manager supported by a team of 6 analysts and 3 laboratory-based leads. In addition, NWLP is supported by the large central ICT Team with dedicated server, network and desktops teams that are used to manage the majority of physical assets. All projects are managed under the PRINCE2® framework; IT Operations are managed under the ITIL framework.
NWLP integrates with a variety of clinical systems for reporting purposes, including those OCS systems listed above, via HL-7 messaging, PMIP / Edifact GP Messaging, ODBC and file transfer. NWL Pathology also maintains a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Data Warehouse for management and financial reporting. To facilitate HL-7 messaging NWL Pathology maintains an integration engine (Sunquest Application Manager – SAM) that provides a unified view to the outside world of the various pathology applications and allows a local level of message translation and transformation.
