Test Background PTH is a major contributor to regulation of circulating calcium. Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs due to adenoma/carcinoma or hyperplastic syndromes and leads to hypercalcaemia. Secondary hyperparathyroidism can occur in renal failure.
Clinical Indications Suspected hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism Differential diagnosis of hypercalcaemia Differential diagnosis of bone disease Assessment of parathyroid following surgical resection of the thyroid gland
Reference Range 1.6-7.2 pmol/L
Sample Required EDTA (lavender top)
Sample Volume 0.5 mL
Turnaround Time 1 day
The Biochemistry laboratory at Hammersmith hospital also provides an intraoperative PTH (ioPTH) service. The ioPTH assay can offer real-time quantitative assurance that all hypersecreting parathyroid tissue has been excised. The service is led by Prof Fausto Palazzo, Consultant Endocrine Surgeon.
