Parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Test Background
PTH is a major contributor to regulation of circulating calcium. Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs due to adenoma/carcinoma or hyperplastic syndromes and leads to hypercalcaemia. Secondary hyperparathyroidism can occur in renal failure.

Clinical Indications
Suspected hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism Differential diagnosis of hypercalcaemia Differential diagnosis of bone disease Assessment of parathyroid following surgical resection of the thyroid gland

The Biochemistry laboratory at Hammersmith hospital also provides an intraoperative PTH (ioPTH) service. The ioPTH assay can offer real-time quantitative assurance that all hypersecreting parathyroid tissue has been excised. The service is led by Prof Fausto Palazzo, Consultant Endocrine Surgeon.
