Test BackgroundPrednisolone is a commonly prescribed glucocorticoid. High doses are used in conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Polymyalgia Rheumatica for its anti-inflammatory actions. Low doses are used in conditions such as adrenal insufficiency and CAH for its corticosteroid replacement properties. Serum prednisolone concentrations can be used to assess whether a dosing regimen provides suitable steroid replacement.
-To assess whether adequate steroid replacement is achieved on a prednisolone dosing regimen. A single prednisolone level should be taken 8 hours after the replacement dose is administered.
-To assess whether an individual is compliant or adequately absorbing their prednisolone medication.
-Day curves may be of value in cases where there is difficulty in achieving an appropriate dosing regimen. Prednisolone should be administered at time point 0 and samples taken at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours post dose.
