Test Background
Carboxyhaemoglobin forms following exposure to carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide binds much more avidly to haemoglobin than oxygen.


Clinical Indications
Determine whether high COHb levels are present decreasing oxygen availability to tissues


Reference Range

< 1.5 % in non smokers
Concentrations in smokers are higher.


Sample Container
Preferably a blood gas syringe. If not, a lithium heparin


Sample Volume
Gas syringe 0.5 mL, Lithium Heparin tube 4 mL
