Mitochondrial antibodies


Test Background
Anti-mitochondrial antibodies (AMA), which are directed against components of mitochondrial dehydrogenase complexes, are detected by indirect immunofluorescence using mouse liver/kidney/stomach (LKS) substrate. Positive results are then tested by liver immunoblot for confirmation.


Clinical Indications

  • Mitochondrial antibodies are associated with primary biliary cirrhosis
  • AMA are also detected in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection and systemic sclerosis
