Islet cell antibodies


Test Background
Islet cell antibodies have been detected in 60-80 % of type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetics before or at the time of diagnosis. 1 to 3 years after commencing treatment, only about 20 % of patients have detectable antibody. Type II diabetics do not have islet cell antibodies.


Clinical Indications

  • Differential diagnosis of type II diabetes mellitus and LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults)
  • Screening of first degree relatives for risk of developing insulin dependent DM (IDDM)
  • May also be used to determine the risk of IDDM in gestational diabetes
