Test Background Islet cell antibodies have been detected in 60-80 % of type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetics before or at the time of diagnosis. 1 to 3 years after commencing treatment, only about 20 % of patients have detectable antibody. Type II diabetics do not have islet cell antibodies.
Clinical Indications Differential diagnosis of type II diabetes mellitus and LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults)
Screening of first degree relatives for risk of developing insulin dependent DM (IDDM)
May also be used to determine the risk of IDDM in gestational diabetes
