Lab Code : COEL
Test Background Tissue transglutaminase IgA (TTGA) antibodies are used to screen for coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis. Endomysial antibodies are used to confirm coeliac disease in patients with weak titres of TTGA antibodies only. Endomysial antibodies correlate well with TTGA and will decrease with adherence to a gluten-free diet. As IgA deficiency is common in this group of patients, serum IgA levels should also be checked.
Clinical Indications Suspected gluten sensitivity. This test is specific for coeliac disease, but a jejunal biopsy is recommended for confirmation Chronic diarrhoea, failure to thrive (in infants) and fatigue Monitoring compliance with gluten-free diet
Reference Range Negative
