Test Background The fasting lipid profile assesses total cholesterol, total triglycerides and high density lipoprotein cholesterol. From these, low density lipoprotein cholesterol may be calculated.
Clinical Indications Family history of cardiovascular or other thrombotic events Diagnosis and monitoring of hyperlipidaemia Monitoring of high-risk groups, eg. hypertensive, obese, diabetics, etc.
Reference Range Greater than 2 years old fasting: <1.7 mmol/L
Sample Required SST (gold top)
Sample Volume 0.5 mL
Turnaround Time 1 day
NotesGP comment Chol: JBS Guideline treatment targets: HEART 2005:91 Sup.V High CVD risk goal Minimum goal Total Cholesterol <4.0 <5.0 Non-HDL Cholesterol <3.0 <4.0 LDL-Chol (Calculated) <2.0 <3.0 See CVD risk prediction charts in BNF for primary prevention. Please note LDL calculation is only valid if patient was fasting. If Tg >4.5, LDL Not valid when TG >4.5/Not Fasting. Use Non-HDL Cholesterol target.
