Parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Test Background
PTH is a major contributor to regulation of circulating calcium. Primary hyperparathyroidism occurs due to adenoma/carcinoma or hyperplastic syndromes and leads to hypercalcaemia. Secondary hyperparathyroidism can occur in renal failure.

Clinical Indications

  • Suspected hyperparathyroidism or hypoparathyroidism
  • Differential diagnosis of hypercalcaemia
  • Differential diagnosis of bone disease
  • Assessment of parathyroid following surgical resection of the thyroid gland
