Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)

Test Background
Calculation of the MDRD formula-derived eGFR is performed automatically on all creatinine requests as a screening test for kidney disease. It is invalidated by: acute renal failure, pregnancy, oedematous states, muscle-wasting disorders, in amputees and the malnourished. eGFR only correlates to CKD stage in the presence of other clinical indicators such as haematuria/ proteinuria.

Clinical Indications
Suspected and monitoring of established chronic renal failure.
