Test Background Calculation of the MDRD formula-derived eGFR is performed automatically on all creatinine requests as a screening test for kidney disease. It is invalidated by: acute renal failure, pregnancy, oedematous states, muscle-wasting disorders, in amputees and the malnourished. eGFR only correlates to CKD stage in the presence of other clinical indicators such as haematuria/ proteinuria.
Clinical Indications Suspected and monitoring of established chronic renal failure.
Reference Range Stage 1 >90 mL/min/1.73 m2
Stage 2 60-89 mL/min/1.73 m2
Stage 3 30-59 mL/min/1.73 m2
Stage 4 15-29 mL/min/1.73 m2
Stage 5 <15 mL/min/1.73 m2
Sample Required SST (gold top)
Sample Volume 0.5 mL
Turnaround Time 1 day
If patient is of black African origin, multiply eGFR by 1.2
We do not calculate eGFR below 18 years
