eGFR is calculated by the CKD-EPI equation and is reported automatically on creatinine requests for all patient 18 years and over. Every eGFR result will carry the comment ‘For patients of African or African-Caribbean ethnicity, the eGFR should be multiplied by 1.159.’. Requesting doctors should apply this correction factor in patients from this ethnic background.
It should not be used for inpatients as they may not be sufficiently metabolically stable, for children under 18 years, in pregnancy, in patients with malnourishment or muscle loss nor acute renal failure or oedeamatous states.
Clinical Indications Suspected and monitoring of established chronic renal failure.
