Test Background C-reactive protein (CRP) is an IL-6-mediated acute phase reactant and correlates proportionally with inflammatory responses. Elevations of circulating CRP are seen to herald worsening of existing systemic conditions and have been demonstrated to correlate with the onset of ischaemic heart disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus.
Clinical Indications Prognostic marker in acute inflammatory states
Diagnostic for presence of underlying infection
Limited utility to the diagnosis of IBS
