New Information on the diagnosis of Bacterial Vaginosis

The Microbiology laboratory have reviewed their current practice and in keeping with national guidance will no longer perform routine Gram stain/ microscopy for the diagnosis of Bacterial Vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis is mainly a clinical diagnosis which can be supported by microbiological investigation.

A recent audit of samples referred to this laboratory showed a positivity rate of around 5% with a third of requests with no cinical details given.

Gram stains will only be performed to confirm the clinical diagnosis where specifically requested. It is proposed that this commence from  1st April 2016.
